Sustainably grown

Here you can read about the main sustainability themes that we are working on at Addenda® with our growers and partners.

Certifications

All growers at Addenda® are MPS or GLOBALG.A.P certified.

With the outcome of the certifications and associated registrations, we can can continuously make strides at Addenda® with our growers to reduce our impact on the environment. All business processes are reviewed annually at the growers in order to comply with these certifications. Our growers must comply with a variety of environmental requirements such as separation of waste products, an environmental plan and correct records of energy, water, fertiliser and pesticide consumption.

These certificates can be requested directly from the grower or through Addenda®.

Green Energy

We use green energy wherever possible to heat the greenhouses. Our growers use energy that is generated through CHP plants (combined heat and power), geothermal and solar power or a combination of these.

One of Addenda®’s growers is connected to a geothermal heat source. In the near future, several Addenda® growers will be connected to a heat grid, which will result in a substantial reduction of our carbon footprint.

Minimal energy impact through cold cultivation

We are continuously working on our environmental impact and aim to minimise our environmental impact through monitoring and analysis of the plant life cycle. These criteria are taken into account when selecting new varieties. Campanula and Hebe have minimal energy impact thanks to cold and outdoor cultivation.

Reuse of water

Our growers collect rainwater in silos and basins, and subsequently use it to water the plants in the greenhouses and fields. All Addenda® growers use a closed water system, so that no rainwater is lost. The excess water is cleaned and purified in a closed system to be reused again and again. Our growers only use clean tap water for employee facilities.

Attention for people, animals and the environment

Plant health

We use plant protection products at Addenda® to produce quality plants. At Addenda®, we only use agents approved by the CTGB; these have been assessed for human, animal and environmental safety. In addition, Addenda® has taken steps towards sustainability in recent years by striving to use as many green and natural resources as possible in our production chain. We are following the ambition of Tuinbranche Nederland (Dutch Garden Sector) with supplementary chain agreements drawn up in cooperation with CLM and monitored by Stichting Natuur & Milieu (Dutch Nature & Environment Foundation).

We structurally monitor the use of agents by means of residue analyses by independent labs at our growers and cuttings suppliers. Since we are dealing with international production, we use Dutch law as the guiding principle for the entire production chain. At Addenda®, the sustainability policy is continuously monitored and we immediately aim to make improvements if it appears necessary.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Our biodegradable labels are produced by our partner Floramedia. The processing (mounting labels to a bamboo stick) and packaging work is done at a sheltered workshop, in collaboration with Floramedia. These steps enable Addenda® to be socially responsible and give people with occupational disabilities the opportunity to work.

Material (re)use

At Addenda®, we constantly aim to use more sustainable potting soil mixtures and optimal (re)use of materials:

  • 100% biodegradable labels;
  • Pots made of +99% recycled plastic;
  • Tray collars made of FSC certified paper.

In 2023 we are taking a giant leap forward by making our labels more sustainable. Making the Campanula and Hebe label single-sided saves 40% material on each label.

Our footprint

Every 5 years, the environmental impact at Addenda® is mapped by Greenhouse marketeers. Once we have gained insights about our current impact, Addenda® can take new steps to optimise processes to reduce and offset our carbon emissions.
